There also exists a subset of skills and effects that are neither staggers nor stuns. They have one feature in common with stuns: they prevent a monster from attacking you, no matter what.
The difference between this kind of attack prevention and regular staggering is subtle, but plays an important role in monsters that have passive effects as well as attacks. A stagger or stun will prevent almost all monster passive effects from firing. Silent Slam (et al.) do not. This means that monsters like [[The Rain King]] will still remove effects even if they do not inflict any damage. However, one of the main benefits of skills like these is that they succeed where stuns and even staggers would fail, being capable of negating monster attacks upwards of +151 [[Monster Level]].
Even more bizarrely, the attack prevention of Silent Slam/Squirt/Slice can be stored up like a stun. If the monster is staggered by a familiar or other source on the round that Silent Slam is used, the monster will still lose an attack in a future round. This delayed action is similar to how stuns work, and the opposite of how staggers work.

Monsters with full stagger immunity will still attack if you attempt to use an item or a skill with nothing selected. |
There are three primary ways adventurers can prevent monsters from attacking:
- Stagger: Staggering prevents the monster from attacking in the current round. It has a 100% chance of working unless the monster has stagger immunity, in which case it has a 0% chance of working. Monsters that are completely immune to staggering will attack as normal after displaying the message:
Unfazed, your opponent attacks you anyway!
- Stun: Stunning prevents the monster from attacking for X rounds, starting with the current round. Stuns can be stacked to keep an opponent down for a very long time. Some monsters have stun resistance which is a percentage change of negating a stun in any given round. If they do, the stun-end message will have (STUN RESISTED!) added to it.
- Beginning at +51 ML, monsters have a chance to shrug off stuns equal to (Bonus Monster Level - 50)%.
- Quick-Cast: Certain skills do not advance the round counter and by extension, will normally prevent combat from resolving in its entirety. None of your passive effects, or the monster's passive effects, fire for this round. Your familiar will not act, and the monster will not attack. However, all monsters with stagger immunity are also unaffected by Quick-Cast skills.
- Similarly, monsters with stagger immunity also get a free attack when you make a mistake that doesn't consume a combat round, such as trying to use a skill without first selecting one, or twiddling your thumbs.
- Blocks: A very small subset of skills that neutralize the damage you would have taken, while preserving every other aspect of the combat round. The lone advantage this has is being able to survive extra rounds against monsters that cannot be stopped by any of the above 3 categories of skills. Monsters with special abilities will apply them as normal.
Each Stun has a certain number of charges. The game uses up these charges in a specific order, regardless of the order in which the skill or item was deployed, and only if the monster is not staggered. More explicitly:
- The game checks to see if the monster is staggered (by a familiar, combat item, skill, or piece of equipment).
- If the monster is not staggered, the game checks to see if the monster is stunned (by a skill or combat item).
- If the monster is stunned, the monster gets one round closer to recovering or moving on to the next source of stunning.
Certain opponents (e.g., Hobopolis bosses, Skid Row houses, or any opponent with sufficient +Monster Level) are resistant to stunning but can still be staggered. Stun-resistant monsters display the normal message for the stun wearing off if they recover (and then attack during the same turn).
Familiars that stagger their opponent are comprehensively described in their articles, and hence are not listed here.
Stunning prevents most, but not all, of an opponent's special actions (passive effects). Some actions, such as the Naughty Sorceress's anti-deleveling or the Weirdeaux creature wolf howl, will still occur.

Stunning
Sources of stunning are presented in the order in which they are queued up. Generally speaking, stuns are used up based on how long ago they were introduced into the game, with more recently-added sources of stunning firing later.

Blocks
There also exists a subset of skills and effects that are neither staggers nor stuns. They have one feature in common with stuns: they prevent a monster from attacking you, no matter what.
The difference between this kind of attack prevention and regular staggering is subtle, but plays an important role in monsters that have passive effects as well as attacks. A stagger or stun will prevent almost all monster passive effects from firing. Silent Slam (et al.) do not. This means that monsters like The Rain King will still remove effects even if they do not inflict any damage. However, one of the main benefits of skills like these is that they succeed where stuns and even staggers would fail, being capable of negating monster attacks upwards of +151 Monster Level.
