This holiday, which commemorates some ancient blood rite or other, involves people dressing in weird clothes and going door-to-door threatening to commit acts of petty vandalism unless the homeowner gives you candy. It's good fun for all involved, except the half-orc hoboes, who complain that when they do exactly the same thing, they get arrested.
Details
Halloween is that time of year when Adventurers dress up and scam candy off total strangers. Or something. It occurs each Porktober 8. To go trick-or-treating, you need an outfit. Visit up to twelve houses per block, getting nasty tricks (i.e. combats) or sweet treats for no Adventure cost! Move on to the next block for five Adventures. Trick-or-treating is available both from Trick or Treat! in Seaside Town and the announcement on the main map.

Special Items
Whatever your outfit, there are ten possible generic results, dependent on the type of house you're visiting:
Adventure | Treat | Notes |
---|---|---|
kid who is too old to be Trick-or-Treating | bottle of whiskey, sturdy cane, Effermint™ tablets | Dark houses. |
suburban security civilian | Way More Tears™ pepper spray, security flashlight, unused walkie-talkie | Dark houses. |
vandal kid | slingshot, carton of rotten eggs, spray paint | Dark houses. |
All-Hallow's Steve | All-Hallow's Steve's fright wig | Dark houses; rare (one-time after victory) |
A Drunk Guy | Swizzler | Lit houses. |
A Fitness Giant | Milk Studs | Lit houses. |
A Hipster with a Crowbar | PEEZ dispenser | Lit houses. |
Some Dweeb | box of Dweebs | Lit houses. |
The Suspicious-Looking Guy | bag of W&Ws | Lit houses. |
A Fun-Size Dilemma | huge bowl of candy | Star house, which appears in 20% of blocks. |
Depending on your outfit, you can also receive the following treats (these adventures override 3 of the lit houses in each block):
Special Adventures
Halloween XIOn Halloween XI, the four existing generic results were replaced by these seven generic Crimbo-themed adventures (Foreshadowing Crimboween): Halloween XXHalloween XX introduced new special combat adventures. These adventures feature monsters that scale to your stats, similar to those found during the Feast of Boris or El Dia de Los Muertos Borrachos. These adventures do not occur while trick-or-treating (or in any other place that does not invoke adventure.php).
Wearing one of the special hats dropped by these combat adventures allows you to trick-or-treat (without an outfit), yielding a new set of trick-or-treat adventures:
Halloween XXVDuring Halloween XXV, The Shivering Timbers location opened up in the Distant Woods. Wearing one of the special hats dropped in this location allows you to trick-or-treat (without an outfit), yielding a new set of trick-or-treat adventures:
Also, a special one-time adventure was added, which dropped an item useful in The Shivering Timbers:
Halloween XLA special one-time adventure was added, which dropped an item during the Silent Invasion:
Halloween XLVI (Cinco de Halloween)The generic non-combats were on this day replaced with various Spanish-talking, cocktail-giving, house-dwelling NPCs. Erm, the non-combats were replaced with other non-combats which contained aforementioned NPCs.
Halloween XLVIIISeveral new monsters were occasionally encountered, all of whom had larger-than usual heads. With the soul knife equipped, they drop mimeplasm in addition to candy.

History
Trick-Or-Treat revamp
The format of Trick-Or-Treating was drastically changed on October 25, 2013. Instead of being individual adventures in Seaside Town, the "Trick-Or-Treating" adventure zone now opens a block of 12 houses. Selecting a house goes to that house to trick-or-treat. This yields any number of different outcomes. Visiting a house does not cost an adventure.
At any time, you can choose to scope out a new block. This costs 5 adventures, and refreshes all the houses on the block (while also randomizing the house images).
New combat adventures have been observed:
- The kid who is too old to be Trick-or-Treating may drop a bottle of whiskey, Effermint™ tablets, and/or sturdy cane.
- The vandal kid may drop a carton of rotten eggs, slingshot, and/or spray paint. His name is randomized.
- The Neighborhood Cop may drop a security flashlight, unused walkie-talkie, and/or Way More Tears™ pepper spray. His name is randomized as well.
- Rarely, All-Hallow's Steve can be encountered, who will drop his fright wig.
Along with the outfit candies, five new candies are dropping. Three of these grant 10 adventures of an effect granting +15 to either Muscle (Milk Studs,) Mysticality (Box of Dweebs,) or Moxie (Bag of W&Ws.) Also dropped are the booze-enhancing Swizzlers, and the highly "collectable" PEEZ dispensers.
Finally, there is A Fun-Size Dilemma, in which the player is offered a choice to "Take the whole bowl" or "Resist the temptation." Both options will result in a huge bowl of candy.
Prior to the revamp on Halloween XLIV, these six generic adventures occurred instead:
Adventure | Treat | Notes |
---|---|---|
The Apathetic Lizardman | Mr. Mediocrebar | Not Halloween XI |
The Market Demon | 2-4 Meat | Not Halloweens XI, XII |
Susie, the Arena Mistress | 3 Yummy Tummy beans | Not Halloween XI |
A Suspicious-Looking Guy | Rock Pops | Not Halloween XI |
The Armorer/Leggerer | Daffy Taffy | Since Halloween XI |
Linnea, the Scream Queen | Spooky Surprise Egg | Since Halloween XVI |
Other History
- During Halloweens L-LXXIV, the new outfits (High-Radiation Mining Gear, Crimbot Crimboutfit, Topiaria, Synthetic Suit, Ceramic Suit and Spelunker's Gear) had no individual adventures. Instead, Trick-Or-Treating with one of those outfits resulted in the Sad Portrait non-combat, which yielded the correct respective candies, but without a unique message.
Notes
- Without an outfit you receive the following message:
- You can't go Trick-or-Treating without a costume!
- You can go Trick-or-Treating while falling-down drunk.
- You can Trick-or-Treat with zero HP. However, you will immediately lose any combats you encounter.
- You will receive your outfit's special adventure approximately 40% of the time, and one of the generic adventures the other 60%.
- According to Xenophobe, there was never an intention for Radio Free Regalia to have its own Halloween yield and adventure.
- For Halloween XI, the text of the announcement under the main map was changed from "It's Porktober 8th!" to "This is Halloween!" since Halloween XI fell on real life Halloween as opposed to Porktober 8th. This also applies to Halloween XVI.
- For Halloween XX, the text of the announcement under the main map was changed to "Spooky things are afoot!
You might as well take advantage of the atmosphere of terror. Click on the Jill-O-Lantern to go Trick-or-Treating in Seaside Town!" - For Halloween XXV, the text of the announcement under the main map was changed to "Something strange is afoot in the Distant Woods, and everybody's so freaked out they've started Trick or Treating early!"
- Prior to Halloween XLV, the text under the announcement was "Click on the Jill-O-Lantern to go Trick-or-Treating in Seaside Town!".
- If you have a Trick-or-Treating Tot as your active familiar:
- Candy drops from lit houses are doubled.
- Encounters are sometime replaced with one giving Prunets.
References
- The announcement change to "This is Halloween!" for Halloween XI is a reference to the intro song of the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas.
- Almost all of Halloween XI is a mirror of the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas, in which Christmas is taken over by Halloween.
- The theme of Halloween XX, mutated plant and animal life being the result of a radioactive meteorite, is the same concept as the horror movie Die, Monster, Die!
