Avatar of Jarlsberg

Avatar of Jarlsberg is the Spring 2013 special challenge path, introduced on February 15, 2013. This path adds variant rules and restrictions to an ascension run. Its description in The Bureau of Reincarnation reads "You're filled with the spirit of Jarlsberg, the Legendary Wizard of the Times of Old. Armed with the secrets of the cosmos, you'll use an entirely new set of powerful spells to devastate your foes."
In practice, that's exactly what happens.
Restrictions
- Consumption
- You cannot consume ordinary food or booze. Only food and booze created in Jarlsberg's Cosmic Kitchen can be consumed.
- Liver is size 9! You will become too drunk to adventure at 10 drunkenness (unless you acquire Liver of Steel and/or Nightcap).
- Your stomach is size 10 (unless expanded with Lunch Like a King).
- You can still use a steel margarita to get Liver of Steel:
- Jarlsberg's spirit won't let you drink this thing, but you outsmart it -- you hold the margarita against your forehead and absorb its essence directly into your brain. Take that, germophobe!
- Skills
- None of your permed skills are available. Mystical Bookshelf skills, however, can be used.
- You cannot attack with your weapon:
- Jarlsberg didn't like to get his hands dirty, and this opponent looks to be absolutely crawling with germs.
- There is nothing under the mahogany nightstand, so you cannot get a skill from the Spookyraven Manor Quest
- Skills from Fragnk, the Regnaissance Gnome are available if your moon sign allows access.
- Really Expensive Jewelrycrafting can be learned by using Really Expensive Jewelry and You.
- Familiars
- You do not have access to any familiars. Instead, you can create food-based companions.
- Familiar hatchlings cannot be put in your Terrarium:
- Jarlsberg won't trust a companion he didn't conjure.
- Items and Equipment
- Skill-granting items, such as Spellbook: Drescher's Annoying Noise, cannot be used:
- Jarlsberg didn't read fiction.
- Blank-Out cannot be used:
- Jarlsberg hated getting his hands dirty. There is no way he would mess with this crap.
- Skill-granting items, such as Spellbook: Drescher's Annoying Noise, cannot be used:
- Locations
- You cannot use the VIP Lounge fax machine:
- Jarlsberg was more into magic than technology.
- Since you cannot join a guild, you do not have access to any zones that require a guild quest to unlock.
- There is no slot into which you can donate meat at Jarlsberg's Gate.
- Avatars of Jarlsberg cannot enter The Sea. Clicking An Old Man gives the following message:
- That shack you saw on the main map was just a picture of a shack drawn on the ground.
- You cannot use the VIP Lounge fax machine:
- Holidays
- During the Feast of Boris, you will still encounter the assorted FoB wandering monsters. However, you will be unable to eat the foods they drop, and you do not gain the extra stomach capacity the holiday would normally grant. Furthermore, the normal holiday text on the front page is replaced with the following:
- Today is the Feast of Boris!
- Brutish holiday. You refuse to participate.
- During the Feast of Boris, you will still encounter the assorted FoB wandering monsters. However, you will be unable to eat the foods they drop, and you do not gain the extra stomach capacity the holiday would normally grant. Furthermore, the normal holiday text on the front page is replaced with the following:
Divergences
- Your main stat is Mysticality.
- You have the usual Mysticality class bonus of +5% resistance to all elements.
- You will not be accepted into any of the traditional guilds. You will not be able to use a guild to unlock any quests or areas. Attempting to join a guild gives the message:
- Jarlsberg never really fit in well in social organizations.
- Starter quest sends you to Dungeoneer's Association to learn your skills via the Jarlsberg's Gate in the same manner as Avatar of Boris does.
- Unlike Saucerors and Pastamancers, Jarlsberg's spells have a hard cap on spell damage (before percentage multipliers) based on the MP spent to cast a spell. This cap may be inadvertently lowered by bringing an astral bracer into a run.
- Upon breaking the prism, you will lose the Jarlsberg class (as well as all related special Quest items), and be asked to choose one of the original classes to play until you ascend again. Your stats will be switched to fit the new class.
- Trying to eat or drink regular food from inventory will result in various message types (depending on method to eat or drink):
- Pop-up window:
- You can't use that right now. Because of reasons.
- Blue box booze use message:
- Jarlsberg didn't trust any booze that he didn't make himself.
- Blue box food use message:
- Jarlsberg didn't trust any food that he didn't make himself.
- Trying to eat or drink items from Chez Snootée or The Gnomish Micromicrobrewery results in:
- Jarlsberg didn't trust any food or booze that he didn't make himself.
- Trying to eat Hobo marketplace food message:
- No way. No way you're eating that.
- Trying to drink Hobo marketplace booze message:
- No way. No way you're drinking that.
- Pop-up window:
- No star starfish is needed in the lair. Using the star key (with hat and weapon) gives the following message: "You telekinetically retrive[sic] the sheet music."
- You do not confront the Sorceress' familiars. Instead, you have a normal combat with Clancy.
- You do not encounter The Naughty Sorceress at all (and thus, need no wand of Nagamar). Instead, you meet (and fight) Clancy and The Avatar of Boris.
- Each of these opponents requires 1 adventure to fight. If you run out of adventures after defeating Clancy, you will not be able to fight Boris.
- A Bugbear of a Problem cannot be completed, as it requires one to equip an ordinary familiar.
Class
Rather than playing any of the traditional 6 classes, you will play as an Avatar of Jarlsberg with entirely different skills.
Items and Equipment
- You start each ascension with Jarlsberg's hat and Jarlsberg's key.
- Chefstaves with a variety of powerful and useful effects can be crafted in the Cosmic Kitchen. The Avatar of Jarlsberg can equip chefstaves without needing any additional skills, including non-Cosmic chefstaves in softcore ascensions.
- Your normal kitchen in your Campground will be replaced by Jarlsberg's Cosmic Kitchen.
- You may still install a Dramatic™ range and use it to cook fancy non-Cosmic dishes such as the Knob cake.
Companions
Companions fulfill a role similar to familiars; but they do not gain weight or levels and are not effected by equipment/effects that increase familiar weight. You may only have one companion at a time. Each time a companion is summoned will cost one of its respective cosmic ingredient. Companions will vanish at the end of each day, but can be created anew after each rollover.
Companions have procedurally generated random names tied to your account. They retain their names when recreated, even across ascensions.
Eggman: +50% items drops, equivalent to a 20 pound Baby Gravy Fairy (made from a cosmic egg)
Hippotatomous: +3 stats per combat (made from a cosmic potato)
Radish Horse: +50% combat initiative (made from a cosmic vegetable)
Cream Puff: +20 monster level (made from a cosmic cream)
Skills
You begin with skill:
Curdle - Zero MP combat spell that inflicts light stench damage
Class skills are learned by entering Jarlsberg's Gate. There are four skill paths: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Dessert. Your cooking skills are used for both combat and crafting food/booze. Unlike previous challenge paths, you do not have to progress linearly down each skill tree. There are some skills that branch out of the main stem of each skill path.
You start with 3 skill points, plus 1 point for each normal AoJ ascension completed, and 2 points per Hardcore AoJ ascension. You gain 1 additional point per level. (Unlike the Avatar of Boris path, you continue to gain skill points after level 15.) A cosmic bucket is also available in Mr. Store which grants up to 15 Jarlsberg skill points (permanently).
All Avatar of Jarlsberg combat spells have a damage cap dependent upon how much MP is used to cast the spell. This means that any equipment or effects that reduce the MP cost of a spell also lower the damage cap. Conversely, things that raise the MP cost of the spell also raise the damage cap.
- These damage caps apply to the total spell damage, including the random base damage, the bonus damage from Mysticality, and all other non-percentage Bonus Spell Damage. Percentage increases are applied after the cap.
- The exact damage cap is (MP spent * 10) for all spells except Grill.
- For Grill, the caps are believed to be (MP spent * 5) for the Hot Damage half, and (MP spent * 10) for the Spooky Damage half.
Elemental Bonus Spell Damage (e.g. "+5 Damage to Hot Spells" from the imp unity ring) does not work for any of Jarlsberg's spells. It is not yet known whether this is considered a bug. Non-elemental bonuses work, subject to the damage caps.

Notes
- Jarlsberg's combat spells have damage caps that vary according to the actual MP cost of the skill.
- Attempting to acquire a skill that isn't available to you yet through remote form submission or URL manipulation yields the following message:
- You don't have the prerequisite skill for that skill. Also stop submitting bogus data.
- Attempting to attack a monster physically through a skill such as Lunging Thrust-Smack (formerly available through a bug exploit) gives the "no-physical-hits" message:
- Jarlsberg didn't like to get his hands dirty, and this opponent looks to be absolutely crawling with germs.
